A mental health and addictions DEI manual

Making DEI a priority isn't just about checking boxes – it's about reconsidering care delivery.

While we've made progress in awareness and treatment options, racialized, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ individuals face persistent barriers when seeking mental health and addictions care.

Research shows that background deeply affects whether someone feels comfortable reaching out for help and what support they receive. Many treatment approaches originate from a Western perspective that doesn’t always resonate with someone’s experiences or needs. When people don't feel seen or understood in mental health settings, they're less likely to stick with treatment, leading to poorer health outcomes.

That's why making DEI a priority isn't just about checking boxes – it's about reconsidering care delivery.

Thanks to a United Way Halton & Hamilton grant, the Mental Health & Addictions Alliance has put together a comprehensive manual that provides resources on, information about, and practical tips on how to create more equitable and inclusive organizations.

The manual is intended to support the development of equity approaches with the intent of fostering inclusion for those who are members of the Alliance and the clients who are accessing mental health and addictions services and expertise.
